Thank you all for the quick replies -- no, guv1976, I did not place the reservation on hold (lesson learned), but at this time I think I will wait a couple months (JJeffrey's suggestion).

To joeyE and scottinaz -- I have read a couple of articles on the milesfeed app which suggest that this practice may indeed exist, but I have yet to experience it.
