So even if SAS through check bags, may make little/no difference. SAS/AC will check you have passport/visa for admission to Canada

Yea the question would be whether OP would have to clear CBSA to retrieve the baggage. Given Air Canada SHOULD check through the baggage, this SHOULD NOT be a problem.
