My bad - and thanks - 160k is indeed for a round-trip booking. Dunno what I was thinking as the numbers themselves should have lit up an alarm bell in my head...

Many thanks for the info, looks like I didn't do my homework as I was under the impression - probably due to being an SQ regular for so many years - that upgrades have a right to be problematic (due to having to wait for confirmation/waitlist clearing)... but that straight-out award flights would be instantaneously bookable.

If that is indeed not the case - with no availability showing just as with searching for upgrades - then that would be an additional headache to deal with. I could technically do a waitlist and simultaneously book a Miles&More redemption (got some miles there to use - though they are a last resort as they never expire in my particular case), so if the AY waitlist clears then I could easily cancel the M&M booking.

That would be genius - just wondering if anything could go wrong in the process but I suppose someone could enact then call and then do the econ booking whilst on the phone to Finnair's hotline, so that one person deals with this from A to Z.

Good point, I have 189k points so not entirely sure what's the best way to drain that balance entirely. 160k for award flights would be the end of it with 29k points left in a void, whereas the upgrade route would allow for two return trips to SIN if you factor in the miles earned in the process. To be honest I'm not entirely sure yet which approach to take...
