I'm still using a '80s vintage QF club bag. Lightweight, set up with three main compartments (documents/brolly/pullover-or-laptop + main clothes section + office/it bits) plus a few extra pockets.

I generally travel with that in the overhead and the essentials (laptop/passport/toiletries) in a satchel with shoulder straps which goes under the seat in front.

The strap was replaced a few decades ago with an asymetric padded strap (with screw lock carabiners for hardware); the zipper pulls are all slowly dying and there's hints of thinning in the corners . One day I'll have to retire it. But "not today"
