To be honest, it was so long ago that I can't remember what the answer was with 100% certainty, but I seem to recall they told me that whatever the service line said was nonsense and that the child could sit anywhere. Which did not matter anyway, as the way I had the seating plan arranged she essentially had to sit in a middle seat. I haven't flown on KLM long haul since then (for reasons completely unrelated!)
