PNRs can be cross-referenced and it goes beyond just a note that an agent has to view to mean anything.

That said, the only benefit in this situation for any type of link or cross-reference is for the companion upgrade waitlist and any preferred seat assignments. Even the elite baggage allowance isn’t bestowed upon companions in separate reservations (cross-referenced or not) but reportedly the agents will do it anyway at checkin.
