Would anyone know what the cancellation fees would be to have the miles reinstated and how closet to departure I can cancel and still get the miles back ?

Assuming no status with United, it’s $125 per passenger to cancel and redeposit the miles, assuming that you do so prior to being marked a no-show (15-30 minutes prior to flight, in most cases). Unfortunately, the fact that you booked them together doesn’t matter.
