I've driven over 1,000 miles each way on a few occasions. It depends on the length of the trip (needs to be a week+ for that), the cost of flying and renting a car vs. wear and tear on my vehicle, whether there are places I'd like to visit along the way, to what extent the gear I'd like to take would be a nuisance to pack onto a flight, and how important the specific capabilities of my own vehicle are (I own a real 4x4, and it's often expensive to rent one).
