I'd second the suggestion of Sukhotai and Sri Satchanalai. Totally overlooked for whatever reason. I could (and did) spend 2 whole days at the former and at least a whole day at the latter wandering around (by bicycle at Sukhotai). You'll likely be the only visitor. I don't think Ayuthaya holds a proverbial candle in comparison.
