Yes, this has been dealt with thousands of times before. BA imposes very high fees, surcharges, etc on reward tickets. Nobody likes it but it is the way it is. There is no way to avoid this if you are based in the UK, but US domestic flights, and RFS flights in Europe are a bit of a sweet spot.
It's not just U.S. domestic flights that are surcharge-free: all AA flights within the Americas (North and South), including Hawaii and the Caribbean, are surcharge free, as are LATAM flights worldwide, and QANTAS intra-Australia flights. And BAEC Avios are transferrable to the Iberia Plus FFP, if both accounts have at least one earned Avios, and have been open for at least 90 days. IB Plus redemptions on IB flights have low surcharges.
