Looks like they're trying to get ahead of the flood of phone calls if/when MAX actually comes back....
I recently flew on a 737-800 swapped from a max 8 and a few people perked up when they heard 800 thinking we were on a max for a min so your theory is valid. In an unrelated note the 800 was so quiet the 700 is now annoyingly loud.
