Just one other comment, I suspect you wound up on 10th floor to be close to parents (which makes perfect sense). Normally the hotel would upgrade elite to a high floor with a view of Benjakitti Park. The view is quite nice.
I think the real charm of SGS shows itself after multiple stays, once the staff and management get to know you. But there are certainly a wealth of Marriott options in Bangkok, with something to suit every taste. After SGS, my next choice is the Athenee, with its fantastic pool. StR also has very nice hardware.
