I have completed my 8-days stay at the SGS. As I mentioned above, my parents stayed in the Rama suite (following a paid upgrade), while I stayed in a Grande room just in front (the room was facing the street, as on the 10th floor the quieter side of the building is reserved to the suites).

The Rama suite is a nice room, as it is been reviewed elsewhere in this thread. The main bathroom is large though the way to reach it is a little awkward --- down the steps, round the wardrobe. The garden is the highlight of the room, as well as of course the hot tub, for those who enjoy bathing. Another drawback is that there is no TV facing the bed (for those, like my parents, that like watching some telly before falling asleep).

The butler service was in general efficient, though non-standard request would cause much confusion and require repeating the request several times until someone would understand (in this case, the request was a thermometer). One user here suggested asking for iced chrysanthemum tea, but they seem not to have --- I asked a few times. I settled for hot camomille in the evening and iced butterfly pea tea in the day. The hot chocolate is quite bad, at least by Italian standard. I am told that the coffee / cappuccino is not so nice either (the one from the Nespresso machine seems better.)

The happy hour is ok. There has been much discussion in the forum on the canapes, so here are my two cents: the amount of food seems fine --- especially because one can always ask a second serving --- but the quality widely varies: from hot food with a Thai theme (quite nice), to turkey ham rolled up and tomato-mozzarella skewers (quite depressing). Sometimes service is swift, sometimes excruciatingly slow. In general, most staff is smiling, courteous, and very friendly, though this is almost a given in Thailand.

Breakfast at Rossini is nice (did not try the bigger buffet as it seemed very chaotic). The room is quiet, the offering is good. The dishes from the menu are also quite nice, but not really varied --- about 90% of the dishes are based on eggs, one way or another. The freshly-squeezed juices are very nice. Again service is hit and miss --- on occasion, it can take over 5 minutes to get a freshly squeezed juice and well over 10 for a cooked dish.

The GM clearly makes an effort to go around the hotel and interact with guests, around the library / living room and a Rossini's. Unfortunately, he was not really helpful in addressing issues brought up with him, which was a major letdown.

All in all it is a fine hotel, but not as nice as I expected it to be (perhaps my expectations were coloured a little from reading here). To my taste, it takes more to stand out in the crowded Bangkok market, and I do not think I will be returning unless I find a bargain price with respect to other hotels.

Indeed my parents have left, but I'll be staying in Bangkok. After some consideration I have decided to move to Le Meridien (which is more conveniently located for what I am doing, and saves me some daily commute).
