SWU on Lufthansa - really basic questions

Hi,
I'm (still) a general non-premier MP member, and a 1K friend has generously offered me an SWU to upgrade an upcoming itinerary on UA/LH. I know that:
1) the SWU needs to be printed (in process) so that it can be presented at the counter
2) the upgrade is on a standby basis (my longhaul outbound is on UA metal with a LH codeshare, my longhaul return is on LH; outbound I have a German connection on LH; return I have a German LH connection and a domestic UA connection)
3) the UA flights can't be cleared in advance, since they have LH codeshares

I've read several threads, on gifting SWUs, etc., but some questions remain, probably because I've never used an SWU.

What I don't quite understand yet is:
- will I have to go standby for each leg of the flight (2 legs outbound, 3 on return)?
- will there be 5 certificates printed, one for each leg, or will I have to keep asking for the original certificate back?
- will this work?? Since I have no status (I will hit premier somewhere over the Atlantic on the outbound...) and I'm going standby, are my odds even reasonable?

Thanks for your patience with a newcomer to the world of upgrades.
