I was flying out of YYC mid December and my flight was delayed because of a mechanical issue, so I was going to miss my connection. While I was on hold calling the main toll free number, an AC agent called me directly and told me that they had already booked me on a more direct flight later in the day. This was before I had any kind of status or anything.

I guess it's all luck of the draw.
