Actually, what you've mentioned there is one of the reasons why AC may sometimes not re-book. They know you weren't going to miss the connection because you were flying with one of the pilots. (YYC is not a pilot base for the widebodies, so it's not uncommon for them to deadhead in, especially from YVR.

As I said, I've found them to generally be reasonable when it comes to re-booking in IRROPs, but it doesn't mean that any IRROPs are carte blanche to just get whatever you want.
