United’s contract forbids booking tickets you have no intention of using, and I think there are a very small number of reports of UA cancelling conflicting tickets, but it’s not clear to me that this would necessarily apply to you.
The suggestion here is of purchasing on multiple carriers. However, there is at least one example here on FT of a GS who
routinely cancelled F tickets as the flight was boarding and had his MP account closed, e.g. lost his GS status.
