This approach makes logical sense to me, but we've seen some reports here that border control enters the departing flight into their database, and wants people to take it.
Rather than booking a flight between CAN and HKG, getting a physical train ticket or a ferry ticket in advance (annoying process, I know) should work.
However, I again want to disclaim that these are uncharted waters, so there is definitely a risk of failure.
