Theoretically it could work, but I do not expect to see this (at least from Air Canada!). AC washed their hands of the northern business when they sold off NWT Air and Canadian North (or whatever they were called) a number of years ago. I do not see that anything has changed to tempt them back to Yellowknife. Also I am one of the pessimists who do not expect AC to have any spare capacity to start new domestic routes. The new RJs will only come in fast enough to replace older aircraft being retired. With the alleged shift to the international business Edmonton is likely to lose routes rather than gain them.
I am not sure if the RJ would be the ideal aircraft for Whitehorse or Yellowknife anyway. Both those places have expensive fuel, as everything has to be trucked up from Edmonton. The B737 was the ideal aircraft because it could carry enough fuel to go and come back on one tank (or so I am led to believe). If they have to gas up in Whitehorse much of the cost advantage may have flown away.
I am just musing here. I would be interested in hearing more about this.
