I would posit part of Marriott's "profitability" strategy (explained in 2019 to the financial community) is clearly to reduce costs for its direct customers (hotel owners), and thus they actually do believe it is "good business to shave costs by a dollar to two by treating Marriott's most frequent guests as second-class guests".
