The way my trip would pan out if I flew SAA would be:
SAA- JFK-JNB
Airlink - JNB-SZK
Airlink -SZK-CPT
SAA - CPT-JFK
I would be flying on SAA for just the international
flights. The domestic
flights would be on Airlink.
The other option I have is to fly Emirates for international and but separate tickets with Airlink for domestic
flights. It would cost $400 a ticket more and it would add 8 hours more travel time.
I'm not really sure how the UA option adds 9-14 hours? It will take the exact amount of time as SAA doesn't fly CPT-JFK so you'll have to fly between CPT and JNB one way or the other.
As for the price difference, I suppose you could call it a "peace of mind" fee, whether it's worth it or not is a personal choice.
Apologies though, UA flies EWR-CPT and not from JFK.
