there certainly won’t be any formal combining of bookings. In terms of checking the bags through you can ask but the answer is very likely to be no. In fact my understanding is that bags must be claimed and taken through customs anyway at the first arrival point in South Africa so tbh even if checked through you would have to reclaim and recheck anyway.
