I was also trying to get a very specific vehicle, 2020 Toyota Sienna because it was the only minivan that they had with CarPlay built-in. They only had two Toyota minivans.. the rest were all older Dodge Grand Caravan minivans without CarPlay.

I'm sure if you go to Japan they will ask why you didn't sign it. Just tell them cause there is no place where it says "not valid if no signature".
In all seriousness, always sign up for the frequent rental car program so you can skip the counter. Almost everybody does it (National, Alamo, Budget, Avis, Hertz. Enterprise you still have to talk to the guy who takes you around the car, though you do get to skip the counter). You then don't have to show your credit card, just ID. It saves you a lot of hassle, from selling up and in your case to this credit card fiasco business.
(I think technically they may ask you to see the credit card but I've never had it happen).
