Sorry to hear of the bad experience on AS. I've flown AS pretty regularly between SJC and PDX and haven't had any problems. They fly out of the 'old' Terminal C at SJC, and for the early morning flights there, the security line and logistics actually aren't too bad (even though you have to walk across the tarmac as opposed to a jetway).
