You should check your provider’s roaming policy/charge.
I have a (not the latest) iPhone with a 3 UK contract. It works in Japan but their roaming charge is very high. I can use it without paying anything extra in most European countries, US, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. When I go to Japan I buy a pre-paid SIM.
