It's a reasonable mistake to make coming from Marriott, not everyone is as up-to-date as us on the rules.
*Some* third party bookings should continue to earn nights, points, and elite benefits, for example FHR, Virtuoso, and most reservations done by a real live human travel agent. I'm not sure about the current treatment of Passkey room bookings for big conferences, assuming that the guest/Bonvoy member pays the bill rather that the charges being direct billed to a master account.
