The specific case, IIRC, was a Premier member on a paid ticket who brought a companion on an award ticket and was able to get the companion added to the upgrade list (IIRC; 3/4 segments cleared). At the time, I was of the opinion that it wasn't allowed, and I'm still of the opinion that UA didn't intend for it to be allowed, but the report was that it worked. Of course, one example doesn't make policy.
