Other issues have gotten rid of the raised numbers on the front of the card but still print them on the back. All Apple is doing is squeezing more money out of their cult followers, who never fail eat up whatever corporate marketing they're fed by Apple. The card has paltry benefits. It's just a status symbol for their fanboys.
Printed on the back, sure, but the fact that they aren't embossed into the card itself is what causes acceptance problems. From the perspective of the merchants that reject those cards, it's no different than if those issuers had not printed numbers anywhere on the card at all.
