The only time I see them show up is when they are the “third country” leg for a TWOV where i am flying into China from the US on Delta. Right after I check in and show my third country itinerary, the separately purchased MU flight appears linked to my DL ticket in the app. So the technical capability is there, they just don’t surface it except for TWOV purposes.
Has nothing to do with TWOV. The agent added the segments so bags can be checked through. If you weren't checking bags through there was no need to add it. TWOV doesn't require them add segment to your record.
