we have a car rental and definitely drive to Kihei and Wailea for food etc; no need for room cooking but there is a very high level of dining choices :-)

I will also add that there's an (obvious) "short cut" from the main entrance to the main road when walking that saves a few minutes. People should keep an eye out for it.

There's also an excellent new Thai restaurant called My Thai Maui near the airport which is a great place to stop for lunch if you have a late afternoon flight out of Maui.
