Important -- for this to work, you don't need to book the same itinerary. If the routing you want costs $1400, then find ANY united-metal fare that costs around that and change within 24 hours.

For example, I have often booked o/w Y fares using combined ETC for routes that I would never fly, simply because the o/w price of that specific UA flight was within a few bucks of the *A fare I wanted to change it to.

Also, what I often do is to purchase a UA metal flight using combined ETC that is actually a few dollars LESS than the cost of the *A routing, and then when doing the change I pay the extra few bucks with my credit card to get the credit card benefits/protections

What is the value of the combined ETC you wish to use?

Whatever you don't use will come back as a new voucher but with same expiration date as original.

Also, no issue changing original ticket for free online in first 24 hours. The only time I have needed an agent is when combining ETC.
