I guess it depends on if you're able to manage your compliant carry-on + personal item efficiently, safely, and politely? I don't feel there's anything specifically wrong with bringing a compliant carry-on and personal item since they're allowed by most legacy airlines. Many business travelers bring a rolling bag and backpack.
I do and I dont know what issues there are with that. Both are compliant - the carry on and personal item backpack.
