If the flight is significantly delayed or cancelled, delta will give you the option of rebooking a new flight or refunding the purchase to the original form of payment.

If you voluntarily cancel the ticket, your only option (with most tickets) is to get the credit minus the change fee, and that's only usable by the person whose name was on the ticket (as you learned).
