An alternative hypothesis is that there was a higher security posture, either a random action (done to complicate the adversaries planning process) or there was credible intelligence of a viable threat. Many, if not all, of the large corporations have security teams that receive threat information from governments. Disney, for example, even has a WMD consequence management team.
