Thanks for the first-hand report. That's some great customer service by the National crew in BOS--they, of course, didn't have to do that for you. When I travel with my family and NEED a minivan or big SUV, I always chicken out and book that vehicle type specifically rather than stressing out hoping one will be on the executive aisle or that, as luckily happened to you, the staff will help me out. Maybe I'll start booking a mid-size (obviously at a MUCH lower rate), if National is going to come through like that!
I had a backup minivan reservation at Alamo but it was $200+ cheaper to book the midsize at National so I was gambling a bit. My experience has been that they're not going to grab you a Full Size SUV for your midsize reservation if you don't have one reserved but in general minivans are so often just put onto all of the aisles that they'll let you take one if they have them to spare.
