You spend $20k on your credit card and earn the points/night credit today. Then in 2020 you cancel for a refund, making your credit card points balance hugely negative. But that negative balance will only need to be worked off during 2020.

It basically shifts spend forward, although the net overall effect is zero. You can also do it with refundable, prepaid hotel bookings via hotels.com, etc.
