Boots are very personal and the fit is important as well; I have my own custom fitted pair that I bring.

Lugging the skis around (flight, rental cars, etc) is too much work. When you book the premium or high performance ski rentals the edge are worked over and the base waxed before your rental as well as the bindings are maintained. The other rental benefit is you get to try various brands.

I owned two pairs while I was residing in Canada. Now located in HK and three ski trips per winter I just rent at my destinations.
