Your family member may find out the cause if they use the Forgot PIN/Password option with the email address. They may get an email for resetting the account (or may not, it's not reliable). Once an email address in the BA system it tends to stick there. So your other alternative is to see whether their email provider has some sort of alias or alternative which can used instead.
