For years, there has been a serious disconnect between the incentive structure of Citi’s AAdvantage marketing team and what’s good for Citi and AA generally. That’s the only plausible explanation for the idiocy of their marketing practices and the eagerness with which they handed out the bonuses that AA is now shocked to find that people eagerly pursued and accepted. What about either Citi or AA would make you think that the fix would be any less sloppy and stupid?
