I had this happen at an HGI in Asia. Booked a very cheap non-refundable BRG rate but my plans changed. I thought I might as well check in online and surprisingly, the next day I received a folio. I wasn't expecting anything but did get the points and nights credit. I wouldn't intentionally do this to get credit, however as this particular property could have made an oversight and the same would not hold true at others.
