I'm assuming the family has checked luggage if traveling with young kids for so long. That means there is less chance to miss a relatively short connection than there is otherwise on a BGO-CPH-US route.
Exactly. This would be one of the rare occasions where I would actually strongly consider checking a bag (even if it just contains my laundry), to try to insure against a misconnect (if I didn’t have a Schengen passport).
