I assume that any hotel except some rural ma & pa place in the USA will expect photo ID when I check in, except places where I'm such a repeat guest that the front desk agents immediately know my name.

OTOH one of my first memorable experiences with a luxury palace in Europe was having the front desk tell me on my second stay that they would never ask me for the same info (passport details, in this case, offered by me but not needed) twice. I was impressed at the time.....and many years later I called the same property on it when they did ask for my passport the first time I returned after the hotel became affiliated with a chain.
