If your mileage upgrade goes through, and you cancel after you receive the upgrade, the $350 is non refundable, and you can pay a fee to redeposit your miles. I had this same situation. I had a ticket I may have had to cancel. I removed the upgrade until I was sure about the flight. I got this info after calling American.
