You have to pick up your bag for customs inspection.
You (probably) can't re-check your bags right away being 8 hours early.
There are 2 places to store bags at YVR, both reasonably priced.
Thanks for chipping in. I'm now thinking of renting a car for the 8 hours so I might just dump the bags in the trunk as a last resort if immediate recheck isn't possible. That'd would solve another problem too -- getting quickly to Granville Island, which the Canada Line doesn't serve, and to the airport Holiday Inn without having to wait for the shuttle, where I have a free stopover room which I intend to use for a change of clothes and a shower before heading to YYC.
