I don't check luggage and YVR is home for me so almost never used as a connection point, so these are (slightly educated) guesses.

You have to pick up your bag for customs inspection.

You (probably) can't re-check your bags right away being 8 hours early.

There are 2 places to store bags at YVR, both reasonably priced.
