When he called, he knew my full name without my saying it, when I called back he was able to pull up my account using my name and last 5 numbers of the account number without my giving him any other information. He didn't ask me for any account specific information other than whether I was selling currency, which I am not. If this is a scam then they already had enough info to do damage.
I did also call the number on the back of my card and they confirmed they had just called me
I do agree people need to be careful.
That is not hard information to find. All they need is a receipt from a purchase or stolen mail with an AmEx bill in it, and they have the last 5 digits of your account and your name. They google your name and now they have your phone number too! Spoofing numbers is very, very easy to do. Apparently a lot of people in the state I live have been getting phishing attempts with someone spoofing the state police's phone number and saying they were the state police. One of my banks also sent letters to all customers yesterday to remind them of the possibility of spoofing phone numbers and phishing attempts.
