It is not price gouging by UA. It is the airline fare system.
$1,099 fare is nothing new on TED. IAD-FLL on TED was quoted at $1,001 on a particular flight on July 3rd (during the July 4 weekend) this year. I flew on the later flight that day and paid $99 for the IAD-FLL segment ($200 round-trip).
