Seriously though - I know you aren't supposed to be out on the streets because of the danger of falling debris. Presumably the best place if you survive the first shock intact is in the middle of an open space with nothing around that could fall on you?

In newer buildings there should be an escape hatch through to the next floors balcony (balcony to balcony).
I would keep a small radio, torch(mag lite is perfect)and water in a back pack somewhere with in reach. I would guess the 2 escape routes for you are to the roof(in case of fire below you) and wait for airborne help, and via the stairs to an open area near by.
Are large objects (dressers , fridge, shelving) secured to walls? If you need help to secure your apartment and find out what the escape routes and areas are , ask at the local ward/ town /village office , please !

Japanese for evacuate is HINAN Suru , Noun -HINAN bashou .

Like JackR said earthquakes can happen at anytime.

I don't live in an earthquake prone area , but I have lived through many Typhoons. Japan's "weather" is not fun!

Take care......
