Not to suggest that your experience is wrong or invalid or anything, but I had heard previously about rural Oregon, that there was a lot of homophobia there. Though the story I heard concerned guys who grew up there as opposed to tourists and out-of-towners.
FWIW, everyone I've ever known from Oregon and the Pacific Northwest has seemed quite charming and tolerant, so I'm not sure why the reputation is what it is.
