They ended up having to cancel as my mother ended up in the hospital with a life threatening illness a few days before departure. Even though they purchased travel insurance the airline tried to invoke that since it was a BE ticket no refund/credit would be allowed.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but wouldn't having travel insurance mean that they could claim from the insurer in such circumstances (assuming that they didn't buy only medical coverage, but bought coverage for nonrefundable expenses), not that the airline itself would give them a refund or credit?
